The Gap unbuttons its new white shirt

The Gap built a fashion following offering cool classics such as jeans and white, button-down blouses.

But in recent years, the retailer has taken unprofitable detours from the mainstream with an ill-conceived plunge into stripes and unpalatable colors, most notably that orange that makes prisoners in jumpsuits look so unattractive.

This month the Gap is rolling out cool limited-edition interpretations of white shirts designed by Doo-Ri Chung, Thakoon Panichgul and Laura and Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte (flanking model), the winners of a fashion contest organized by Vogue magazine and the Council of Fashion Designers of America .

Priced between $68 and $88, the shirts also are designed to make the Gap balance sheet look more enticing.
