Two for the wine rack, a red and a white

The second most frequent question shoppers ask me is for recommendations for great wines and spirits.
The first most-asked question: Can you suggest good, bargain-priced wines?
Well, here are two, a red and a white, I'd keep on hand for entertaining a crowd during the holidays without breaking the bank.
DaVinci Chianti Classico, widely available for about $12, is a classy, well-made red that is fruit forward, food friendly and not too heavy on tannins. Crafted in Vinci, Italy, it's slightly peppery with tones of ripe cherries, without being too sweet. Uncork about a half hour before serving to allow the flavors to expand.
One of the best buys in white wines is Gallo's Twin Valley Sauvignon Blanc, which you can find for about five bucks. In fact, the price tag is so modest, I was prepared to use the wine for cooking if it didn't meet table standards. I drank it, instead. A pale straw in color, this sauv blanc is skillfully balanced, with scents of tropical and citrus fruits, ripe melon and a clean, pleasant finish. It's a nice wine -- and a super value.
