Wow, that was fast! Amazon's same-day delivery

Soon, consumers nationwide could be ordering books, CDs and other goods from Amazon.com much the same way we call out for pizza. And like that white pie with spinach and garlic, you would receive your books and CDs that very day.

Amazon transportation director Mike Bhaskaran said the e-tailer wants to broaden its same-day service outside New York City, where orders placed before 11 a.m. are delivered that day.

The system works best in densely populated areas where couriers can reach lots of customers quickly. But Bhaskaran says the program could be rolled out nationwide "very soon," meaning farmers in Nebraska willing to pay a premium for quick service can receive their best sellers before evening milking time.

Amazon also will continue to promote its Amazon Prime service, in which customers receive second-day delivery of all orders for a $79 annual fee.
