Boscov's wants to card you

Boscov's is extending an attractive lure to shoppers who sign up for the retailer's credit card.

Today and Saturday, customers who charge their purchases on a Boscov's credit card can double their "shopping pass," a special store discount applied at the register when the cashier swipes the bar code on a paper coupon. Instead of ringing up an additional 10-50 percent off, Boscov's card holders will receive a discount of 20-100 percent.

So why this display of generosity? The reality is retailers make money in more ways than simply buying wholesale, marking up prices and selling merchandise. Credit cards -- and the interest the retailers collect on the balance -- are an important element in the revenue stream.

If you want to take advantage of the enhanced discount, by all means get out your Boscov's card. Just remember that any savings you realize will quickly melt away if you don't pay the balance in full when the bill arrives.
