It's snowing bread and milk
We knew the snow was coming -- and we knew we were in for only a light dusting.
Yet the press at local supermarkets was only slightly less than you would expect were a nor'easter roaring our way.
So, what were these consumers after?
Bread and milk, of course. We're such traditionalists, we easterners.
So what do the folks in southern California stock up on when they think it might actually rain?Brie and Chardonnay, I bet. They wouldn't want to venture out into all that moisture to buy more cheese and wine.
I think about the folks in line at the markets here, clutching a squashed loaf of pumpernickel in one arm and a half gallon of skim milk in the other. I bet more than a few are on low-carb diets or are lactose intolerant but didn't want to feel left out.
But what do folks who consume neither bread nor milk do when it's about to snow?
Plant a banana tree?

I avoid the grocery store at all costs before a storm. I'd rather eat baked beans and soup for a few days than go through that mess.
Yeah, why the sudden need to eat French Toast when a snowstorm hits?
I try to avoid the stores when I hear all that hype, but sometimes it's just my normal grocery day.
One of my favorite spectator sports as a Philly native: Watching the local TV news people fall all over themselves with a the coming of a bit of "the white stuff."
I guess each geographic area has certain items that define "necessity". I know in Baltimore the traditional items are "bread, milk and toilet paper". If you miss the weather report you can tell it's going to snow by the empty shelves in the bread and milk aisles. I grew up in southern Virginia, and when bad weather is on the forecast they head to the store for water and batteries.

I went to the Acme in Voorhees yesterday (Sun) to pick up a few things they had on sale, not even thinking about snow.
The store was crowded and the lines long. I then started thinking to myself that it must be going to snow.
The one thing I need (and keep in a good winter supply) is my tea in the winterg :) Maria
Wow, I can't believe I forgot the third element of the shopping-before-snowing trinity. Toilet paper! Thanks for the reminder!
I'm a South Jersey native currently living in Cali, and I should remind you that people here don't eat bread (all those carbs, you know). When a storm is about to hit (and by storm, I mean a quarter inch of rain), they raid the stores for water and frozen quiche.
