All charged up over batteries

Years ago, I walked into Radio Shack with a dead flashlight and handed it to a clerk.

"Make it work, please," I said.

Batteries, especially how to choose them and install them, have always been a mystery to me. That's why I'm so excited about Batteries Plus, a new store in the West Marine shopping center on Route 73 in Mount Laurel. The store carries more than 12,000 SKUs, ranging from surge protectors to hearing aid batteries. The nice folks there also will replace the battery in your watch or test your car battery to see if it will need to be replaced soon.

A while back, I was met with a blank stare at Radio Shack when I asked for a battery for the key fob for my Saab. For $3.79, I can buy one those itty-bitty alkaline cylinders that fit into the chirper at Batteries Plus. So much cheaper than getting a new car.
