Backpack buyers put style over substance

New backpacks are at the top of lots of back-to-school lists.

But few moms and dads consider safe, health-conscious, spine-friendly bags, according to Shopzilla's recent survey of parents with school-aged kids. The survey found:

- Slightly more than half -- 52 percent of parents -- say their kids have complained their backpacks are too heavy, but 73 percent don't think the kids have ever been injured carrying a backpack.

- In evaluating buying decisions, 69 percent of moms and dads rank style as the top considerations, compared to 36 percent who rate safety first.

- Seventy-three percent of parents load backpacks according to what will fit, while 26 percent are aware of guidelines for packing backpacks safely.
